An Endangered Royal Flight

  1. The Monarch emerges from its jeweled chrysalis
  2. wings creased and limp
  3. then, empowered by gentle movement,
  4. it is strong enough to
  5. fly from flower to flower, seeking
  6. nectar and a mate
  7. Several generations later, at summer's end,
  8. instinct directs the royal flight south
  9. Over established, yet unknown routes
  10. until it reaches the Mexican Sierra
  11. Mountain sites, owned by ejidatarios,
  12. lovingly loaned to the butterflies
  13. In Canada, US, and Mexico, this regal insect
  14. needs flowers to nectar, milkweed for nurseries,
  15. Oyamel firs for protection and
  16. respite from northern winters
  17. Its survival is a challenge to scientists,
  18. government officials, and landowners
  19. Can three countries act as one to save the
  20. Monarch Butterfly and its wondrous migration?
