Migrating Monarchs -- Fall

  1. Monarchs now are moving west
  2. And south, with firm resolve --
  3. Twenty miles a day, I'd guess,
  4. And 3 months time involved.
  5. Flying just above the land,
  6. This journey's quite immense --
  7. O'er parlous lakes and parched sand,
  8. And guided by what sense?
  9. Singly do they make their way
  10. But gather here and there;
  11. Fraught by rain and colder days
  12. And winds which doth impair.
  13. Many monarchs doomed to fail --
  14. The odds are rather high;
  15. Many monarchs orange and frail,
  16. But wondrous that they try.
